by The Los Angeles Dodgers advanced to the League Championship Series in the 2024 MLB playoff round. After five scoreless innings from Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Dodgers shut out the Padres on Friday, eliminating their NL West rivals from the playoffs and clinching their own NLCS berth.
The New York Mets were the first team to achieve it. The sixth-seeded Mets got a grand slam from star shortstop Francisco Lindor to give them a win in NLDS Game 4 on Wednesday, knocking out the Philadelphia Phillies in the process. The Mets just clinched a playoff spot on Monday, September 30 (one day after the end of the 28-team regular season) and are now four wins away from reaching the World Series. They will travel to Los Angeles to play the Dodgers starting Sunday.
The Phillies, on the other hand, failed to win a playoff series in 2024 after winning the NL pennant in 2022 and reaching the NLCS last season.
The New York Yankees clinched their ALCS berth on Thursday with a Game 4 victory over the Royals behind a dominant start from Gerrit Cole and an offense from Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres. They await the finale of Game 5 of the ALDS between the Tigers and the Guardians on Saturday.
In the Wild Card Series last week, the Tigers eliminated the Houston Astros while the Royals eliminated the Baltimore Orioles. Both AL Central underdogs won the best-of-three series in two away games. The Astros saw their streak of seven straight ALCS appearances come to an end, while the Orioles are now 0-5 in the playoffs over the past two seasons.
Over in Holland, the Padres took care of business in the wild card round, defeating the Atlanta Braves. The Mets, meanwhile, won their first playoff series since appearing in the World Series since 2015, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers in the only decisive Game 3 of the round.
