There appeared to be significant movement on the trade front for the Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams earlier this week. Trade news was expected as the current teams of Adams’ two former quarterbacks (Aaron Rodgers‘Jets and Derek Carr‘s Saints) were trending in the right direction to secure the services of the star receiver.
That momentum was disrupted with the firing of the Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday, and now the Raiders are struggling to find anyone who meets their asking price.
After deciding to seek a trade partner for Adams, Las Vegas set its price at a second-round draft pick. Initially, the Raiders also recognized that Adams’ current contract would be an obstacle to making a deal a reality, which is why they were reportedly open to taking on a portion of it, but more recently they have been adamant about not committing to a significant portion of the contract pay . According to veteran NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, who appeared on the VSiN Morning Line this morning, no team has come close to meeting any of these Raiders demands.
While Saleh’s firing in New York and stern demands from Las Vegas have significantly slowed the path to a trade, the general consensus is that it is still more likely to happen. In a question-and-answer session this afternoon, Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal discussed the likelihood of Adams and the Raiders improving their relationship. While he pointed out that “you can never say never in situations like this” and suggested some ways that would ultimately lead to Adams staying in his place, Bonsignore overall felt that it “would be a surprise if Adams didn’t would be traded.”
As for Adams’ playing availability, the veteran has missed the past two weeks despite reportedly suffering from a hamstring injury. While there was initially hope that he would return this week, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that Adams has officially been ruled out for the team’s game against the Steelers in Week 6.
