A number of former Washington Capitals players showed they still have some game left to play Friday at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex.
After the 2024-25 Capitals team stepped off the ice after the final practice before opening night, nearly forty former club members split into two teams for a friendly game to celebrate the franchise’s 50th anniversary season. Team Labre took on Team Langway in an 8-6 thriller that included two goals and strikeouts from the first and only match. Craig Laughlin.
“I have a disagreement with the coaching staff, Al, it’s as simple as that,” Laughlin told Monumental Sports Network’s Al Koken before the first puck was even dropped. “I can’t believe they won’t [start] Their best player, but I still hope that the team… well, they can win, but as long as I get my points, I’m happy today.”
After voicing more about his distrust of Yvon Labre from behind the bench, Laughlin revealed that he would be using another legend’s bat in the game. Color channel Monumental Sports Network jumped on the ice with a very popular Bauer Supreme TotalOne affiliate.
“I’m using Alex Ovechkin’s stick today, so there have to be a few more goals in there,” Laughlin said.
The Great Eight must have left some of their magic behind when Laughlin, who scored 136 career NHL goals, scored in the second period. The goal sparked a comeback for Team Labre, which eventually turned a 5-2 deficit into an 8-6 victory, including another goal from Laughlin in the final minutes.
Other scorers in the game included Peter Bondra, Kevin Kaminski, Blair Stewart, Tomas Fleischmann, Matt Herr, Matt Pettinger and Brian Willsie. The team’s alumni were joined on the ice by military members of the Capitals Warriors Hockey Team and TikTok influencers The Hockey Guys.
Team Langway and Team Labre will compete in our Alumni Game today at 2:00 p.m.!
