Federico Dimarco, Andrea Cambiaso and Samuele Ricci are among the Italian players named as stars of Luciano Spalletti’s midfield ‘revolution’ after a disappointing run at EURO 2024 in Germany this summer.
Italy recovered well from disappointment in Germany, recording a particularly encouraging 3-1 away win against France in September, followed by a 2-1 win against Israel. The Azzurri held Belgium to a 2-2 draw on Tuesday but played the entire second half with 10 men.
Although it is still early days, Spalletti and his team have received praise for their performances since the European Championships, particularly the coaching changes in and around the midfield.
Here are five Italian players who will play an important role today and in the future.

Tuttosport wrote on Monday about Italy’s strength at full-back. Federico Dimarco is considered one of the best in the world in his left position Andrea Cambiaso is starting to attract the attention of some of the biggest clubs in the world.
The focus is primarily on midfield, where Luciano Spalletti has several exciting options to choose from. One of his most praised picks was Samuele Ricci, who was in the starting line-up for all of Italy’s last three international matches.
Another is Nicolo Fagioliwhom Spalletti took with him to the European Championships, even though he had played practically no football the season before. His recent selection has also earned Spalletti recognition, especially considering he is not always a starter at club level.
Sandro Tonali is also considered part of the ‘Spalletti Revolution’ as he was absent from the European Championships but has since returned to the team and added a much-needed bit of bite and strength to the Azzurri’s midfield.
Although Italy have other established options to choose from in midfield, namely Nicolo Barella and Davide Frattesi, there have been suggestions that Spalletti should look to build his future midfield around Tonali and Ricci.
