Of all the news we could have gotten on a Friday afternoon before the Atlanta Falcons’ game against the Carolina Panthers, Kevin King’s release wasn’t exactly at the top of my list of things to expect. And yet here we are.
The team only recently announced the move, and now we have to wonder what corresponding move is in the works. The Falcons appear to be getting Dee Alford (concussion) back against the Panthers and have Antonio Hamilton, so they obviously expect to be without King, who could very well end up back on Atlanta’s practice squad.
The obvious move? Activating Nate Landman from injured reserve and having him ready to play on Sunday suddenly feels much more likely. Landman was listed as questionable on the week’s final injury report, and the fact that he practiced limited bodes well for his availability. Given that the primary mission of this Falcons defense is containing the dynamic Chuba Hubbard, Landman’s return would be extremely welcome.
As for King, who played primarily on special teams after a strong summer in Atlanta, we hope to see him back on the roster or at least on the practice squad down the road. His return after battling injuries for years was a great story, and I’m both hopeful and pretty sure we haven’t seen the last of him in a Falcons uniform.
